Picture Your Peace: A Creative Path to Stress Relief

By: Daniel Tiapon

Life naturally moves through peaks and valleys, and with those shifts often comes stress. Sometimes stress builds slowly and silently, catching us off guard when life is moving too fast for us to check in with ourselves. That is why managing stress is so important. But how can we manage something when we are not even sure where it’s coming from? The answer begins with self-awareness. When we take time to understand ourselves, we start to recognize the people, patterns, or pressures that are weighing us down. One way to begin this process is through vision boarding, a simple yet powerful tool that helps bring clarity to our thoughts, emotions, and goals.

What Is Vision Boarding?

Vision boarding is a creative process in which you create a collage of images words, and phrases that reflect your goals, values, and vision for the future. What makes it especially powerful is that in order to map out what you want, you first have to turn your attention inward. The foundation of any meaningful vision board is self-reflection. This act alone can be incredibly helpful in understanding what is causing you stress. As you take time to explore your thoughts and feelings, the vision board becomes a visual journal, crystallizing your inner experience into something tangible. It encourages you to reflect on your stressors, how they manifest in your life, and what they can reveal to you. By selecting meaningful images or symbolic expressions, you are not just creating a board; you are practicing metacognition. This process helps clarify what matters, filter out what doesn’t, and focus your energy on what is both important and possible.

Creating a vision board is both a hands-on and a mindful experience. It’s not only about cutting and gluing, but also about checking in with yourself, listening to what matters, and giving those insights a visual home. Here’s how to get started.

How To Make Your Own VisionBoard

Step 1: Create a Quiet Space

Find a calm, uncluttered environment where you can reflect without distractions. Put on relaxing music, light a candle, or diffuse essential oils if it helps you feel grounded. Let this be a time just for you.

Step 2: Reflect on Your Stress

Before reaching for glue or scissors, pause and ask yourself:

  • What is currently weighing on me?
  • What resources are available to help me cope with this stress?
  • When do I feel most overwhelmed or anxious?
  • What kinds of thoughts or environments help me feel calm and safe?
  • What does peace look like in my daily life?

Write your insights in a journal or notebook. This step is crucial, as it brings clarity to what you need to manage to help reduce stress in your life.

Step 3: Gather Your Materials

You’ll need:

  • A poster board, corkboard, or even a large sheet of paper
  • Scissors and glue stick or tape
  • Old magazines, printed images, photos, quotes, stickers, or drawings
  • Markers or pens for adding words or captions
  • No need for anything fancy. Use what you already have around the house if possible

Step 4: Choose Images with Intention

As you flip through magazines, photos, and/or browse online images to print, look for visuals that reflect:

  • Calm, rest, and balance
  • Supportive people or environments
  • Words or phrases that soothe you
  • Symbols of your ideal daily routine, self-care habits, or emotional state

Focus on how each image makes you feel, not just how it looks. This board is about emotional alignment and stress relief, not perfection.

Step 5: Arrange & Assemble Your Board

Once you’ve collected your materials, start arranging them on the board. Group related images together if you’d like (e.g., calm spaces, supportive relationships, self-care routines), or mix and match intuitively. There is no right or wrong here, just what feels authentic to you. When you’re ready, glue or tape the images down.

Step 6: Sit With Your Creation

Take a few minutes to breathe and look over your finished board. Ask yourself:

  • What themes or patterns do I see?
  • How does this board reflect my desire for peace or healing?
  • What simple actions can I take this week to help alleviate stress in a healthy way?

This final reflection turns your board into more than just a collage. It becomes a tool for self-awareness and intention-setting.

Step 7: Display It Where You’ll See It

Place your vision board somewhere you can glance at regularly—by your desk, on your nightstand, or near your meditation area. Let it serve as a visual reminder to protect your peace and honor your emotional well-being. Stress is a natural part of life, but how we respond to it can make all the difference. When we take time to slow down and reflect, we create space to reconnect with what truly matters. Creating a vision board offers a meaningful way to do just that. Through this intentional yet straightforward practice, we begin to understand ourselves more deeply, identify the sources of our stress, and focus on what supports our well-being. Whether you're going through a challenging time or looking to bring more balance into your daily life, a vision board can serve as a steady reminder to prioritize your peace, one thoughtful step at a time.
